Bulldogs open the season with two wins at Wallace-Selma, Ala.
The Holmes Community College Bulldogs opened up the 2012 season with a road sweep at Wallace Selma, 10-6 and 5-0.
In the opener, Rafiel Johnson (1-0) picked up his first win of the year on the mound with a complete game effort. Johnson allowed six unearned runs on five hits while striking out eight. Johnson retired nine of the first ten batters he faced, and nine of the last ten batters he faced. Seven Bulldog errors lead to six Selma runs. Offensively, the Bulldogs pounded out eight hits in the ballgame, and scored in every inning except the second. Johnson and Trennis Grant lead the Bulldogs with two hits apiece. Johnson added his first homerun of the year. Darius Knight, Jacobby Robinson, and Blake Bowman each added one hit a piece. Denzel Goolsby added his first homerun of the year.
In the nightcap, Steven Blanchard and Channing Sanders combined on a three-hit shutout. Blanchard (1-0) picked up his first win of the year throwing six innings allowing three hits and striking out eight. Sanders completed the shutout pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Offensively, the Bulldogs only managed three hits in the ballgame, but took advantage of eight hit by pitches and three walks. Darius Knight, Shawn Stricklin, and Steven Blanchard each had one hit a piece.
Games three and four of the series were rained, and no make-up date has been set.
Up Next: The Bulldogs will participate in the USA Stadium Flag City Classic in Millington, TN on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25. On Friday, the Bulldogs will face Ellsworth at 11:00 am and Wabash Valley at 2:00 pm. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will face Danville Area at 11:00 am and Ellsworth at 2:00 pm.
