Bulldogs fall to Gulf Coast Bulldogs, 46-12 in the home opener

GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs trailed the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs 21-12 at halftime, but Gulf Coast 25 unanswered in the second half to pull out the 46-12 victory over Holmes in the home opener here Thursday night.

With the loss, Holmes fell to 0-2 on the season while Gulf Coast improved to 2-0. The Bulldogs play host to Northeast Mississippi Community College on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Madison Central High School in Madison. The game can be heard on the Bulldog Football Network beginning at 6 p.m. with  the Jeff Koonz Coaches Show.

Gulf Coast jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Byron James scored Gulf Coast's first touchdown with 10:38 left in the quarter. The other score came on a 53-yard pass from Clint Hatten to Tyrone Williams with 3:45 to play in the quarter. Stephen Brauchle added two extra points.

Holmes then got on the scoreboard twice to pull within 14-12. The first score came with 13:36 left in the second quarter when Dennis Robertson found Fred Franklin from 61 yards out. The other score came with 5:54 to play when Franklin scored from four yards out. The snap was mishandled on the first extra point, and Gulf Coast recovered the Bulldog fumble but did not score. The other try was missed by Matt Spencer.

In the second half, Gulf Coast scored 14 points in the third and 11 points in the fourth quarter. The third quarter scores included a 27-yard run from James and a 74-yard run from JoJo Snell. Brauchle's two extra points were good.

The fourth quarter scores included a Hatten touchdown pass of 59 yards to DeAdrian Terry. Gulf Coast then picked up a safety when Robertson was tackled in the endzone and Brauchle added a 27-yard field goal with 4:49 to play in the game.

Robertson finished the game 19-of-30 for 222 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Jonathan Rumph had four catches for 100 yards while Franklin had four catches for 59 yards and Daniel Huffines had five catches for 46 yards.
