Bulldogs fall in North Division opener, 40-14

GOODMAN --- Costly mistakes early in the contest helped the Itawamba Community College Indians jump ahead of the Holmes Community College Bulldogs in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs then played from behind the remainder of the game and fell 40-14.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the North Division. Holmes hosts East Central in a Military Appreciation Game next Thursday in Grenada at Grenada High School at 7 p.m. You can listen on the Bulldog Football Network or watch live at www.holmesccmedia.com.

The Bulldogs got the ball to start the game, but the Bulldogs fumbled at their own 35, and the Indians scooped it up and returned it all the way to the three yard line before the Indians scored on a three-yard run. The extra point was good, and ICC led 7-0 with 12:42 left in the first quarter.

After a 17-yard punt, the Indians played on a short field from the Holmes 39. The Indians drove down to the five yard line before the Bulldogs forced the Indians to attempt a 22-yard field goal which was good with 5:14 left to play in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs fumbled the ball once again the Indian 43. Itawamba drove the rest of the first quarter before scoring from five yards out early in the second quarter. The extra point was good, and Itawamba led 17-0 with 14:55 left in the first half.

Holmes got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Aquindus Henson broke free from 18 yards out. Alex Robles extra point made the score 17-7 ICC with 3:51 left in the first half.

Itawamba added a field goal late in the first half to end the first half with a 20-7 lead.

Itawamba opened the third quarter scoring with 11:53 left in the quarter on a 14-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, and ICC led 26-7.

Holmes answered the third quarter touchdown with one of its own when Reggie Carter scored from six yards out. Robles extra point was good and ICC led 26-14.

Itawamba added a quick score on a 52-yard run. The extra point was good and Itawamba led 33-14 with 3:59 left in the third. The Indians added another score with 10:57 left to play in the game on a six-yard run. The extra point was good, and ICC led 40-14.

Bryant led the Bulldogs in rushing with 55 yards on 21 carries while Dre Massey had 52 yards on nine carries. Buddy Benson and Jamar Smith each had nine tackles for the Bulldogs.
