GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with No. 6 East Mississippi Community College Lions early in last night's contest here and held an eight-point lead, but East Mississippi pulled away in the end for the 44-28 North Division victory.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the North Division. The Bulldogs travel to Coahoma next Thursday night at 7 p.m. You can watch the game live at www.holmesccmedia.com or listen live on the Bulldog Football Network.
Holmes got on the scoreboard with 4:55 to play in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Dejerric Bryant found sophomore running back Dre Massey on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Kyle Settlemir's kick was good, and the Bulldogs led 7-0.
East Mississippi answered the score in a little over a minute on a touchdown pass of its own from 33 yards out. The extra point tied the game at seven with 3:53 to play in the first.
The Bulldogs answered the score with 1:29 to play in the first when Bryant found sophomore running back Arthur Turner on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Settlemir's kick was good, and the Bulldogs led 14-7.
On East Mississippi's next drive, the Lions broke loose on a 63-yard touchdown run. The Lions failed the extra point attempt when the ball sailed over the holder's head. Holmes held the 14-13 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Turner picked up a rushing touchdown for the Bulldogs when he ran in from 40 yards out. Settlemir's kick with 12:23 left in the first half gave the Bulldogs a 21-13 lead.
East then reeled off three touchdowns to finish the first half with a 34-21 lead. East had two rushing touchdowns, one from two yards out and one from seven yards out and a touchdown pass of two yards. All three extra points were good.
The Bulldogs came out in the third quarter and scored quickly when Bryant found Massey again, this time from 66 yards out. The extra point was good, and East led 34-28.
East picked up a 39-yard field goal in the third and added a rushing touchdown from eight yards in the fourth. The extra point was good and ended all scoring with 9:43 left in the game.
Treviante McDaniel led the Bulldogs in rushing with 99 yards on 25 carries while Massey had 73 yards on 12 carries. Bryant was 5-of-17 for 175 and three touchdowns. Massey had three catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
