GOODMAN --- Awful weather in the first half from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey didn't stop the Holmes Community College Bulldogs' offensive production as Holmes held a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime lead over East Central Community College. The Bulldogs then added 28 more points to win the non-division game 49-14 here Thursday night in the season opener.
The Bulldogs will travel to Summit on Thursday night to play Southwest Mississippi Community College at 7 p.m.
Holmes finished the game with 494 total yards, 457 yards on the ground and 37 in the air. The Warriors finished with 353 total yards, 201 on the ground and 152 in the air.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 14-0 with 7:08 left in the second quarter after a 13 yard run from sophomore running back Sanchez Berry. McKay's kick was good.
Freshman quarterback Jesse Wilson's one yard run with 1:11 to play before halftime put the Bulldogs up 21-0 after McKay's kick was good.
Brent picked up his second touchdown of the night with 11:11 to play in the third quarter. McKay's kick was good to make the score 28-0.
The Warriors then got on the scoreboard with 9:16 to go in the third quarter when Quentin Gibson found Kevontaye Caston on a 24 yard touchdown pass. Zach Engell's extra point made the score 28-7.
The Bulldogs answered right back when sophomore quarterback Josh Dodd scored from five yards out. McKay's extra point made it 35-7 with 6:08 to play in the third.
Later in the third quarter, Dodd broke loose on a 54 yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 42-7.
The Warriors then scored with 24 seconds left in the third quarter when Gibson scored from a yard out. Engell's kick was good, and Holmes led 42-14.
The Bulldogs' final score came with 8:05 left to play in the game when Wilson scored from 10 yards out. McKay's kick was good, and the scoring ended at 49-14.
Brent finished the game with 157 yards on 19 carries while Dodd had 121 yards on 12 carries. Wilson had 11 carries for 67 yards.
