WESSON --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs hopes of winning a state title were dashed here Thursday night as the Bulldogs fell to the Pearl River Community College Wildcats, 65-54, in the finals of the MACJC State Tournament at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 20-6 on the season. Holmes will now wait to see who they will play in the Region XXIII Tournament starting Wednesday at Mississippi College. The game can be watched live at www.holmesccmedia.com.
The Wildcats jumped out to a seven point lead with 12:43 to play in the half at 12-5 as Darralyn Willis scored on a layup for the Wildcats. Holmes cut the lead to one point at 19-18 with 6:28 to play in the first half when Cedric Harper scored on a shot in the paint. Holmes took their first lead at 21-20 with 5:19 to play in the first half when Daryl Macon hit a three-pointer. The team went back and forth the final five minutes of the first half, and the game was tied at 27 at halftime.
Holmes jumped out to a three point lead twice in the first five and half minutes to play before the Wildcats tied the game at 34 with 14:17 to play and never trailed again. A Willis free throw with 32 seconds to play gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game at 15 at 65-50.
Macon finished the game with 15 points while Marcus Washington had 10. Leading rebounder was Washington with six and Vercell Webster had five. Holmes shot a dismal 31.9 percent from the floor and 18.8 percent from behind the three-point line. Free throws kept the Bulldogs close at times as Holmes shot 87.5 percent (21-24).
The Wildcats were led by Willis with 27 points while Malik Clements had 16. Willis led with six rebounds. Pearl River shot 45.8 percent from the floor, 26.7 percent from three-point range and 70.8 percent from the free throw line.
