GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs and the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers will battle for the fourth time this season on Wednesday at noon in the Region XXIII Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton.
The Bulldogs, 20-6, are coming off a second place finish in the MACJC State Tournament on Thursday after falling to the Pearl River Wildcats, 65-54 while the Tigers, 17-8, fell to the Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon in the semi-finals of the State Tournament, 69-59. Holmes fell to Northeast in Booneville, 55-54, then defeated the Tigers, 71-67, in Goodman in the other two games.
Other tournament games include: Pearl River vs. Baton Rouge, 6 p.m.; East Miss. vs. Southern-Shreveport, 8 p.m.; and Jones vs. East Central, 2 p.m.
Holmes is averaging 72.7 points per game and is giving up 51.7 points per game. Holmes is led by Daryl Macon (6-3, guard, freshman, Little Rock, Ark.), Marcus Washington (6-1, guard, sophomore, Clinton), Cedric Harper (6-6, forward, freshman, Tallahassee, Fla.), Jarvis Williams (5-8, guard, sophomore, Jackson) and Dietrich Taylor (6-5, forward/center, freshman, Jackson).
Macon is averaging 23.3 points per game and is in the top five in scoring in the NJCAA. Marcus Washington is next with a 9.4 points per game average while Harper gets 8 points per game, Williams scores 6.9 points per game and Taylor scores 5.8 points per game. Harper brings in 5.1 rebounds per game with Washington right behind him at 4.9 rebounds per game. Williams is the leading three-point shooter with a 40 percent average with Macon having a 39.8 percent average. Harper gets 2.3 blocks per game for the Bulldogs.
As a team, the Bulldogs are shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 36 percent from the three-point line and 72.7 percent from the free throw line with Macon shooting free throws at 86.3 percent. Holmes brings in 29.6 rebounds per game and dishes out 13.4 assists.
Northeast is averaging 73.4 points per game and is giving up 71.2 points per game. Northeast is led by Dimario Jackson (6, guard, sophomore, Brusly, La.), Raheem Sorrell (6-5, forward, freshman, Corinth), Desmin Harris (6-2, guard, freshman, Corinth), Cannon Edwards (6-3, guard, sophomore) and Dexter Stafford (6-4, forward, sophomore, Corinth). Edwards was injured in the last regular season game and did not play in the MACJC State Tournament.
Jackson is averaging 19 points per game. Sorrell is averaging 11.1 points per game while Harris is averaging 9.4 points per game, Edwards is averaging 6.3 points per game and Stafford is averaging 6.0 points per game. Stafford brings in 6.3 rebounds per game while Sorrell brings in 4.9 rebounds per game. Edwards leads in three-point shooting with a 33.7 percent average.
As a team, the Tigers are shooting 42.9 percent from the floor, 32.3 percent from the three-point line and 70.7 percent from the free throw line with Jackson shooting free throws at 87.4 percent. Northeast brings in 39.4 rebounds per game and dishes out 13.9 assists.
