NJCAA TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Holmes vs. Hill

HUTCHINSON, Kansas --- The 20th-seeded Holmes Community College Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA National Tournament with a 78-67 win over the No. 4-seeded Indian Hills Community College Warriors here Tuesday night.

With the win, the Bulldogs went to 25-6 overall and will play the 12th-seeded Hill College Rebels of Hillsboro, Texas, 30-3 overall, at 2 p.m. Thursday. Hill defeated Mineral Area, 84-83, in the second round. The game can be watched on njcaatv.com.

Holmes is averaging 73.6 points per game and is giving up 54.6 points per game. Holmes is led by Daryl Macon (6-3, guard, freshman, Little Rock, Ark.), Marcus Washington (6-1, guard, sophomore, Clinton), Cedric Harper (6-6, forward, freshman, Tallahassee, Fla.), Jarvis Williams (5-8, guard, sophomore, Jackson) and Dietrich Taylor (6-5, forward/center, freshman, Jackson).

Macon is averaging 23 points per game and is fifth in scoring in the NJCAA. Marcus Washington is next with a 10.1 points per game average while Harper gets 8.5 points per game, Williams scores 6.8 points per game and Taylor scores 6.4 points per game. Washington brings in 5.2 rebounds per game with Harper right behind him at 5.1 rebounds per game. Williams is the leading three-point shooter with a 38.6 percent average while Macon has a 37.9 percent average. Harper gets 2.2 blocks per game for the Bulldogs.

As a team, the Bulldogs are shooting 45.4 percent from the floor, 36.3 percent from the three-point line and 72.2 percent from the free throw line with Macon shooting free throws at 88.6 percent. Holmes brings in 30.8 rebounds per game and dishes out 13.8 assists.

Hill College is averaging 98 points per game and is giving up 54.9 points per game. The Rebels are led by Marcus Johnson, Jr. (6-1, sophomore, guard, Charlotte, N.C.), Tyrell Bellot-Green (6-7, sophomore, forward, Mississuaga, Ontario), Jemerrio Jones (6-5, freshman, guard, Memphis, Tenn.), Devocio Butler (6-6, freshman, guard, Atlanta, Ga.) and Evan Moorman (6-1, sophomore, guard, Memphis, Tenn.).  

Johnson is averaging 16.7 points per game. Bellot-Green is averaging 15 points per game while Jones is averaging 13 points per game, Butler is averaging 11.1 points per game, and Moorman is averaging 10.8 points per game. Jones brings 13.2 rebounds per game while Coris Williams, Jr. of Powder Springs, Ga. is averaging 9.5 rebounds per game. Moorman leads in three-point shooting with a 53.9 percent average while Bellot-Green has a 49.7 percent average, and Johnson has a 43.2 percent average.

As a team, the Rebels are shooting 48.1 percent from the floor, 45 percent from the three-point line and 67.2 percent from the free throw line. Hill brings in 51.4 rebounds per game and dishes out 24.4 assists.
