ELLISVILLE --- Holmes Community College sophomore guard Daryl Macon poured in 35 points and pulled down 10 rebounds here Monday night as the 20th ranked Bulldogs defeated the Jones County Junior College Bobcats, 95-82, in overtime.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 3-0 on the season. Holmes hosts William Carey University JV tomorrow night in Goodman at 6 p.m. before playing Pearl River on Monday at 8 p.m. in Goodman. You can watch Monday's game live at holmesccmedia.com.
Jones jumped out early in the first half 7-0 before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard. Holmes took their first lead at 14-13 on two free throws from Jamahl Jackson. Jones retook the lead and led 38-35 at halftime.
The teams swapped baskets until seven minutes remaining when the Bobcats went up by six, 65-59 and then increased the lead to 10 points, 67-59, with 5:25 to play. Three consecutive buckets from D'Angelo Richardson, Macon and Cedric Harper pulled the Bulldogs to within four with 3:35 to play in the game.
Jones stretched the lead to five at 75-70 with 1:45 to play before Macon took over in the final two minutes. Two Macon free throws made it 75-72 with 1:36 to play, and then he hit a three-pointer with 1:08 to go in the game to tie the game at 75.
Macon picked up where he left off in regulation as he hit a three-point with 4:45 left in overtime to give Holmes the 78-75 lead. A Harper dunk with 1:20 to go stretched the lead to 10 points, and Jackson's two free throws took it to 14 points at 94-80 with less than a minute to play.
Harper finished the game with 21 points and nine rebounds while Richardson had 17 points. The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor, 53 percent from the three point line and 83 percent from the free throw line.
