GOODMAN --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs, the No. 8 seed, will face Jones County Junior College, the No. 1 seed and MACJC State Champions, in the first round of the Region XXIII Tournament Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Mississippi College.
Holmes, 16-8 overall, fell in the semi-finals to Jones last Wednesday night while Jones, 25-1, defeated Northeast Mississippi Community College in the MACJC State Championship last Thursday night in Ellisville.
Holmes is led in scoring by freshman guard Trevais Spencer, who is averaging 13.8 points per game. Freshman guard Mikkel Norment is averaging 13.6 points per game while freshman forward Justin Johnson is averaging 12.1 points per game and freshman guard Keith Gilmore is averaging 10 points per game. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 75.9 points per game and are shooting 47.8 percent from the floor, 37.6 percent from three-point range and 68.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Holmes is giving up 69.8 points per game.
Jones is led by sophomore forward Bruce Stevens, who is averaging 16.8 points per game. Sophomore guard David Davis is averaging 15.1 points per game while sophomore guard Rickey Holden is averaging 12.3 points per game, sophomore guard/forward Tristin Walley is averaging 11.7 points per game, sophomore guard Leito Holloway is averaging 10.7 points per game and sophomore guard Maurice Dunlap is averaging 10.1 points per game. As a team, Jones is averaging 94.6 points per game and is shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, 37.3 percent from the three-point line and 74.9 percent from the free-throw line.
