GOODMAN --- The No. 23 ranked Holmes Community College Bulldogs will face the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars in the opening round of the NJCAA National Tournament on Monday, March 19 at 2 p.m. CST in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Holmes comes into the NJCAA Tournament as the Region 23 Champion and District XV representative while Western Nebraska comes in as the Region IX Champion and District IX representative. Western Nebraska is located in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The game can be watched at njcaatv.com.
The Bulldogs are 24-4 on the season while the Cougars are 26-7. Holmes defeated Co-Lin and Southwest before knocking off Pearl River in the Region 23 title game last Friday. Western Nebraska won the Region IX title on Saturday vs. Otero Junior College. They won three games over McCook, Central Wyoming and Sheridan College to get to the championship game.
Holmes is led in scoring by sophomore guard Trevais Spencer, who is averaging 13.7 points per game. Freshman forward Javon Franklin is averaging 10.8 points per game while sophomore guard Mikkel Norment is averaging 10.2 points per game and. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 79.6 points per game and are shooting 49.3 percent from the floor, 34.4 percent from three-point range and 65.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Holmes is giving up 61.64 points per game.
Western Nebraska is led by sophomore guard Vinnie Shahid, who is averaging 18.1 points per game. Freshman Jervay Green is averaging 14.7 points per game while sophomore guard Trent Harris is averaging 13.6 points per game, sophomore guard Djordje Dimitrijevic is averaging 13.4 points per game and sophomore forward Marlon Sierra is averaging 12.8 points per game. As a team, Western Nebraska is averaging 93.2 points per game and are shooting 51 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent from the three-point line and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line.
