Bulldogs finish second in the MACJC State Tournament; head to Region XXIII play

POPLARVILLE --- The Holmes Community College Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 to the Pearl River Community College in the first 25 minutes here Sunday in the finals of the MACJC State Tournament and were not able to recover falling 4-2 in the title game. However, the Bulldogs continue play this week in the Region XXIII Tournament with a play-in game Thursday.

With the loss, the Bulldog fell to 12-4-1 overall on the season. Holmes will play Meridian on Thursday at Lamar School at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to the Region XXIII Tournament on Saturday against the same Pearl River Wildcats.

Pearl River got on the scoreboard first in the 22nd minute when Garrett Head scored an unassisted goal. The Wildcats then went up 2-0 in the 25th minute on a goal by Austin Douglas.

The Bulldogs scored nine minutes later when Willie Goliday scored on a Ryan Hudson assist in the 34th minute. Head added his second goal for Pearl River with less than a minute left in the first half of play and led 3-1 at halftime.

Holmes then pulled to within a goal at 3-2 when Hunter Warren scored off an assist from Cameron Lomonaco in the 75th minute. Pearl River added their final goal in the 88th minute off a goal by Jackson Harlan.
