Lady Bulldogs fall in MACJC State Tournament; end season at 19-26

PERKINSTON --- The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs scored first in Sunday's first round game of the MACJC State Softball Tournament here, but Jones County answered the run with two of its own to take a lead they would never relinquish winning 7-1 and ending the Lady Bulldogs' season at 19-26.

Holmes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Karina Brown reached on a two-base error, went to third on a ground out and scored on Keana Wash's single. Jones answered with two runs in the third and five runs in the fifth preserving the win.

Kelsey Marter, who finished the season with a 13-10 record, pitched the entire game. She gave up seven runs on eight hits struck out one and walked two. Brown led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits while Victoria Hunt and Wash added a hit each.

Charneissa Gordon led the Lady Bulldogs in hitting for the season. She batted .315 for the year with 41 hits, 33 singles, seven doubles, one homerun and 20 RBI. Other hitters for the season were Lauren Tharp, .263 average, 15 hits, 13 singles, two doubles and six RBI; Alecia McDaniel, .259 average, 15 hits, nine singles, six doubles and seven RBI; Keana Wash, .258 batting average, 34 hits, 26 singles, six doubles, one triple, one homerun and 15 RBI; Katherine Pennington, .255 average, 25 hits, 21 singles, 3 doubles, one triple and 11 RBI; and Victoria Hunt, .255, 27 hits, 23 singles, four doubles and six RBI.

For the year, Marter threw 155 1/3 innings. She gave up 147 hits, 74 runs and struck out 77 and walked 21 with a 1.80 ERA. Katie Johnston finished 6-11 and gave up 118 hits, 70 runs and struck out 51 and walked 16 with a 3.69 ERA in 93 innings. Kelsey Rogers finished the year 0-5 in 44 1/3 innings of work.
Marter, Tharp,  McDaniel, Hunt and Kaitlyn Hicks are all sophomores and played their last games for Holmes.
