Lady Bulldogs lose heartbreaker to Lady Lions; throw North Division into a quandry

SCOOBA --- Going into Monday's game here at East Mississippi Monday night, the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs knew how important the game and win were for postseason play. Holmes and East Mississippi battled the entire 40 minutes before East Mississippi pulled out the 72-71 win to pull even with the Lady Bulldogs in North Division play at 6-5.

With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 15-7 overall.  Holmes rounds out the regular season with a 6 p.m. game with Northeast Mississippi Community on Thursday night in Goodman. The Lady Bulldogs are still waiting to see if they'll make postseason play which is scheduled to begin on Monday at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson. East Mississippi led 17-14 with 11:48 to play in the first half after Bre Jernigan hit two free throws. Holmes' LaShonda Wilson tied the game at 17 after hitting a two point bucket and free throw with 11 minutes to play in the first half. East then recaptured the lead with 10:35 to play in the first half and held a 36-30 lead at halftime.

Holmes then tied the game at 38 with 17:34 to play in the game when Tiffany Jones hit a two-point bucket. Holmes increased the lead to 42-38 on a bucket from Aja Williams with 17 minutes to play. East retook the lead minutes later at 44-42 when Ashley Johnson hit two free throws and went up 46-42 before Tayanna Purnell hit a two-point bucket with 12:05 to play to tie the game at 46. Holmes increased the lead to 50-46 with 11 minutes to play when Akia Washington hit two free throws. The teams swapped leads, and Holmes held a 63-59 lead with four minutes to play after a basket from Wilson.

East Mississippi tied the game at 63 and then went ahead by three at 66-63 after a three-pointer from Johnson with 1:45 to play. East Mississippi then held the lead the remainder of the game. Holmes' Minyone Hill scored with 3.6 seconds to play to make it 72-71 East Mississippi. Holmes then got the ball with .1 left on the clock, but Purnell was unable to get the shot off as the horn sounded.

Jones led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points while Purnell had 12 and Minyone Hill had 11. Wilson led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 rebounds while Purnell had 11.
