WESSON --- The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs fell behind early today in the First Round of the MACJC State Tournament and fell to the East Central Community College Lady Warriors, 90-69.
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 16-8 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs now await word on the Region XXIII Tournament next week at Mississippi College in Clinton.
East Central jumped out to a 12-4 lead with 17:17 to play in the first half when Tynika Bender made a two-point bucket and a free throw. East Central increased the lead to 14 points at 24-10 when Jonta' Hughes hit a free throw with 14:34 to play in the first half.
Aja Williams hit a free throw with 13:06 to cut the deficit to nine points at 24-15, but the Lady Warriors increased the lead to 17 points when Bender made a two-point bucket and a free throw making the score 36-19. The lead grew to as much as 22 points in the first half. East Central led 56-38 at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs cut the lead to 15 points on two occasions in the second half. The first came with 17:40 to play when Williams hit a three-pointer. Tayanna Purnell then made the score 60-45 with 16:16 to play on a bucket. The largest lead for East Central came with 8:12 to play in the game at 29 when Bender scored on a layup.
Williams led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points while Carmesha Nalls added 15 and Tiffany Jones had 13. Kawaii Perry led the Lady Bulldogs with six rebounds while Jones, Nalls and Minyone Hill each had five.
Holmes shot 38.4 percent from the floor, 17.6 percent from the three-point line and 58.8 percent from the free throw line. East Central shot 43 percent from the floor, 19 percent from the three-point line and 72.7 percent from the free throw line.
