REGION XXIII PREVIEW: Lady Bulldogs to battle Lady Wolves in Region opener

GOODMAN --- After finishing the record season at 16-7 in Region XXIII games, Coaches Jamilah Andrews and LaTaryl Williams have led the 2015 Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs to next week's Region XXIII Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton.

Holmes, now 16-8, will play state champion Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves, 26-0, in the opening round of the region tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m. The game can be watched live at www.holmesccmedia.com.

Other tournament games include: Itawamba vs. East Central, noon; Meridian vs. Northwest, 6 p.m.; and Baton Rouge vs. Jones, 8 p.m.

Holmes played Co-Lin in the season opener and fell 75-69.

Holmes is averaging 73.8 points per game and is giving up 47.8 points per game. Holmes is led by Aja Williams (5-9, guard, freshman, Jackson), Carmesha Nalls (5-5, guard, sophomore, Lexington) and Tiffany Jones (6-0, forward, freshman, Memphis, Tenn.).

Williams is averaging 18.1 points per game while Nalls is averaging 13.5 points per game and Jones is averaging 11.4 points per game. Leading rebounder for the Lady Bulldogs is Jones with 8.7 rebounds per game. Nalls leads the Lady Bulldogs from behind the three-point arc with a 32.5 percent average.

As a team, the Lady Bulldogs are shooting 37.6 percent from the floor, 29.1 percent from three-point range and 62.5 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs bring in 43.2 rebounds per game and dish out 15 assists.

The Lady Wolves are averaging 80.9 points per game and are giving up 46.6 points per game. They are led Claresa Banks (5-9, guard, sophomore, Jackson), Alexis Collins (5-6, guard, freshman, Jackson), Kelley Allen (5-11, forward, freshman, Brandon), Jamilah Sanders (5-8, guard, freshman, Canton), Tyra Gibson (5-9, guard, sophomore, Sunset, La.) and Arnissayur Robinson (5-9, guard, sophomore, Raymond). Banks did not play in the MACJC State Tournament after getting injured in the regular season. Her last game before the State Tournament was Nov. 16 in a 98-85 win over Meridian.

Banks is the leading scorer for the Lady Wolves with 12.8 points per game followed by Collins with 12.2, Allen with 10.5, Sanders with 8.5, Gibson with 8.4 and Robinson with 7.2. The leading rebounder for the Lady Wolves is Allen with 6.7 rebounds per game. Collins is the leading three-point shooter with a 39.6 percent average from behind the arc.

As a team, the Lady Wolves are shooting 45.4 percent from the floor, 29.8 percent from the three-point line and 63.8 percent from the free throw line with Collins shooting 74.2 percent. Co-Lin brings in 43.4 rebounds and dishes out 16 assists.
