CLINTON --- After leading the majority of the second half here Thursday afternoon against the State Champion Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves, the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker in the final 1.1 seconds when the Lady Wolves hit a basket underneath for the win.
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs ended the season at 16-9 while Co-Lin advanced to the semi-finals Friday night versus Itawamba. Holmes led 31-30 at halftime after sophomore guard Carmesha Nalls hit a long three-pointer as the half ended. Holmes then held as much as a 16-point lead in the second half, but the Lady Wolves fought their way back into the game.
Holmes took a quick 2-0 lead on a bucket from Aja Williams. Co-Lin then went up 6-2 with 16:20 to play in the first half when Arnissayur Robinson scored for the Lady Wolves. Holmes tied it at six with 15:21 to go in the half on a bucket from Tiffany Jones and went up 9-6 on a bucket from LaShonda Wilson with 14:15 to play.
Co-Lin tied the game at 15 on a three-pointer from Jamilah Sanders with 10:15 to play in the first half and then went up 17-15 before the Lady Bulldogs retied the game at 17 with 8:35 to play in the half on a bucket from Jamieca Sheriff. The game went back and forth, and the Lady Wolves held a four-point lead with 5:45 to play before halftime and held the lead until Nalls' three-pointer at the end of the half.
The Lady Wolves took a 33-31 lead on a three-pointer from Tyra Gibson with 19:05 to play in the game before Jones tied the game for Holmes with a bucket with 18:30 to play. A Williams' bucket put Holmes up 35-33, and the Lady Bulldogs went on a tear from that point and led 52-36 with 12:15 to play on a bucket from Jones.
After Holmes was up 56-40 with 10 minutes to play, the Lady Wolves went on a 29-12 run to close out the game. Williams hit two free throws for the Lady Bulldogs to make the score 66-61 with 1:20 to play. Tenazhia Hinkeson then hit two free throws for Co-Lin with 49 seconds left to get the Lady Wolves within one point at 66-65. Co-Lin took a 67-66 lead with 30 seconds left when Robinson hit two free throws before Nalls hit a two-point bucket to give Holmes the lead with 6.8 seconds to play before Robinson scored a bucket with 1.1 seconds to give Co-Lin the win.
Williams and Nalls each led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points while Minyone Hill had 12 and Jones had 11. Jones led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 rebounds while Wilson had 12.
For the game, the Lady Bulldogs shot 38.2 percent from the floor, 23.1 percent from the three-point line and 53.8 percent from the free throw line.
Collins led Co-Lin with 18 points while Kelly Allen had 12, Sanders had 11 and Hinkeson and Robinson each had 10.
For the game, the Lady Wolves shot 37.5 percent from the floor, 28.6 percent from the three-point line and 58.6 percent from the free throw line.
Holmes outrebounded the Lady Wolves 55-39 in the game.
