Lady Bulldogs advance to MACJC semis with win over Southwest Lady Bears

SENATOBIA --- The Holmes Community College advanced to the semi-finals of the MACJC State Tournament here today at Northwest Mississippi Community College with a 47-43 win over the Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 17-7 overall. Holmes will play No. 5 ranked Jones County Junior College at noon Wednesday. Jones defeated Itawamba, 89-59. You can listen live on breezynews.com or watch live at nwccrangers.com/watch.

Southwest jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first period before the Lady Bulldogs took their first lead at 10-9 with 2:15 left in the first period. The Lady Bulldogs led 13-9 after one period. The Lady Bulldogs led by six with 5:36 left to play in the second period. A Ja'Breonia Veasey gave Holmes a 10-point lead at 21-11 with 1:35 left before halftime. Vaquela Pimpton hit two free throws and a bucket put Holmes up 25-11 just before halftime. Holmes led 25-13 at halftime.

A bucket from Nhamia Wilson gave Holmes a 15-point lead at 36-21 with 1:30 left in the third and Holmes led 36-25 after three. Southwest cut the lead to six at 36-30 with 8:03 left in the game. Holmes went back up six with 6:26 left in the game on a bucket from Brittany Webster. The Lady Bulldogs clung to a one-point lead, 40-39, with 2:45 left. Kamelia Lacy hit two free throws with 21.7 seconds left to put Holmes up three, 44-41, and Pimpton made two free throws to put Holmes up 46-43 with 15.4 seconds left. Nina Carpenter put the game out of reach in the final seconds after hitting one of two free throws.

Pimpton finished the game with 11 points. Webster and Jonja'Nay Spivey each had eight rebounds while Tyaira Wilson finished with seven.
