Eleven Bulldogs named to All-State, All-Region teams

Eleven Holmes Community College Bulldog football players were recognized by the MACJC for their play during the 2013 season including three First Team selections, five Second Team selections and three Honorable Mention selections. Spencer and Shepard were also named to the All-Region XXIII Team and will now be considered for NJCAA All-American.

Sophomore punter Matt Spencer of Brandon, freshman defensive back Tee Shephard of Fresno, Calif. and freshman linebacker Traver Jung of Greenville were named to the First Team. Sophomore defensive back Kris Givens, sophomore defensive end Richard Mitchell, sophomore wide receiver Dee Joyner, sophomore offensive lineman Talbot Buys and freshman offensive lineman Stuart Shaw were named to the Second Team while sophomore running back Fred Franklin of Jackson, sophomore defensive back Jammie Jamison of Yazoo City and freshman defensive lineman Lyndon Johnson were named Honorable Mention.

Spencer finished the season with 65 punts for 2609 yards for a 40.1 average. He had a long of 54 yards with 23 punts downed inside the 20, two fair catches and six touchbacks. Spencer finished seventh in the NJCAA.

Shepard finished the season with 54 tackles including 36 solos. He also had two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries for 29 yards, six pass breakups and an interception return for 82 yards.

Jung finished the season with 70 tackles including 47 solos. He also had 11 tackles for loss for 40 yards, one forced fumble and a pass breakup.

For the second teamers, Givens had 39 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss for five yards, one forced fumble, one recovered fumble, four interceptions for 43 yards and three pass breakups. Mitchell had 39 tackles, three sacks for 27 yards, 6.5 tackles for loss for 31 yards, one forced fumble, one recovered fumble for 14 yards and one pass breakup. Joyner had 29 catches for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Buys and Shaw started at every game with Buys playing right tackle and Shaw playing center.

For the Honorable Mention selections, Franklin had 281 yards on 89 carries and four touchdowns. Jamison finished the season with a team-leading 82 tackles including 55 solos. He had 3.5 tackles for loss for eight yards, four forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles, one interception for 18 yards and four pass breakups. Johnson had 15 tackles, 3 sacks for 19 yards, three tackles for loss for 14 yards and a pass breakup.
