Jamison named MVP of the MACJC All-Star Game

BOONEVILLE --- Holmes Community College sophomore Jammie Jamison who was representing the North Division All-Stars received the James H. "Wookie" Gray Most Valuable Player Award here Thursday afternoon in the annual All-Star Game. The South won the game 6-3.

Jamison of Yazoo City finished the game with two solos and one assisted tackle and had an interception and return of 10 yards on the first play of the game. Bulldog sophomore kicker/punter Matt Spencer of Brandon had the North's only points in the game on a 19-yard field goal with 12:36 to go in the second quarter. He also punted six times for a 33 yard average. Bulldog sophomore running back Fred Franklin of Jackson ran the ball four times for 10 yards with a long run of 11 yards. Sophomore defensive back Kris Givens of Ridgeland had a pass breakup in the endzone for the North.

Named in memory of Gray, who was a veteran of 33 years on the sideline. Gray spent his last 16 seasons at Mississippi Delta Community College where in 1993 he led the Trojans to a perfect 12-0 record, which included a 20-16 win over Nassau Community College for the NJCAA National Championship.

Under his direction, Mississippi Delta claimed MACJC North Division titles in 1978, 1984 and 1993. The Trojans won the MACJC State title in 1993 and were runner-ups in 1978, 1988 and 1991.

Gray's career record was 139-69-6.

Gray was also a winner in the classroom and insisted that his players take advantage of their athletic ability to get an education.

Hundreds of "Wookie's" players went on to sign scholarships with four-year schools, which is what this All-Star game is all about. Thirteen former players went on to play professional football and two have played in the Super Bowl.
