Bulldogs fall to Pearl River Wildcats, 28-14
POPLARVILLE --- Holmes Community College freshman running back Dre Massey had eight carries for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as Pearl River Community College defeated the Bulldogs here Thursday night 28-14.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 1-1 on the season. Holmes travels to Itawamba on Thursday, Sept. 11 in a 7 p.m. contest. The game can be heard on the Bulldog Football Network.
Jovon Detto got the scoring started for the Wildcats on a 35-yard field goal with 1:40 left in the first quarter.
Pearl River increased the lead to 10-0 with 9:30 left in the first half when Darrell Robinson scored from six yards out. Detto's extra point was good.
The Bulldogs pulled to within 10-7 with 3:11 left in the first half when sophomore quarterback Jamario Benson found Massey on his first touchdown from 39 yards out. Cole Ballard's extra point was good.
The Wildcats added another score just before halftime when Detto nailed a 29-yard field goal with three seconds to play in the half.
Pearl River increased the lead to 20-7 with 9:42 left in the third quarter when Kaylon Cooper found Bryant Magee in the endzone from 45 yards out. Detto's extra point was good.
The Bulldogs answered the score with Massey's second touchdown of the night. He took the pitch from Benson and raced 82 yards for the score. Ballard's extra point made it 20-14 with 5:05 left in the third.
Pearl River's final score of the night came early in the fourth quarter when Robinson scored again, this time from the one yard line with 12:50 to play in the game. Cooper then connected with Charles Ducksworth to make the score 28-14.
Jamal Veazey led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles while Mohamed Camara had nine tackles and Theron Hodges had eight.
