Bulldogs get big win over Southwest Bears, 78-70
SUMMIT--- Holmes Community College Bulldog sophomore Demarcus Lewis poured in 31 points and 10 rebounds here Monday night to help lead the Bulldogs to a big 78-70 win over the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 overall. The Bulldogs begin North Division play on Thursday night at 8 p.m. versus East Mississippi Community College. The game can be watched at holmesathletics.ihigh.com.
Holmes Community College jumped out to an eight point lead with 15:07 to play in the first half when Donnell Nicholas made one of two free throws to put the Bulldogs up 9-1. Two Deville Smith free throws and a layup brought the Bears to within two points at 9-7 with 14:16 to play in the half. The lead went back to as much as 12 points the rest of the way before halftime when Tamarico Wilson hit a jumper with 4:36 to make the score 31-19. Holmes led 34-27 at halftime.
Southwest tied the game at 46 when Deione Weeks made a layup with 12:15 to play in the game. Holmes stretched the lead back to 10 points with 5:37 to play when Tamarico Wilson hit two of two free throws. Three points was a close as the Bears came the rest of the way.
DeAndre Scott had 13 points in the game.
In the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Tournament last week, the Bulldogs fell twice. Versus Pensacola, the Bulldogs fell 50-49 and versus Gulf Coast the Bulldogs fell 74-67.
Against Pensacola, Scott had 22 points while Demarcus Lewis followed with 13. Daveon Slaughter had six rebounds. Against Gulf Coast, Scott and Wilson each had 16 points while Lewis had 14. Slaughter had nine rebounds in the game.
