Bulldogs open season with a 68-65 win

DECATUR --- Holmes Community College freshman Jarvis Williams hit three key free throws down the stretch to help the Bulldogs edge the East Central Community College Warriors here Saturday in the season opener for both schools.

With the win, the Bulldogs go to 1-0 and host Baton Rouge Community College, La., Monday night in Goodman at 8 p.m. The game can be watched live at holmesathletics.ihigh.com.

Holmes jumped out to a 13-3 lead before East Central came back to take a 27-23 lead with 5:02 left in the first half. A Williams bucket later tie the game at 31, and a Williams three-pointer gave Holmes the 34-33 lead at halftime.

Back and forth in the second half was the tempo of the game. East Central led 50-46 before Tamarico Wilson tied the game at 65 with three minutes left. Williams hit one of two free throws to put Holmes up 66-65 and then two free throws by Williams gave Holmes the lead for good with 11.2 seconds to go.

Williams, a freshman from Jackson, led the Bulldogs with 26 points including three three-pointers and 10-of-14 shooting from the floor. Tamarico Wilson had 17 points for the Bulldogs including five two-point buckets and seven free throws.
