Bulldogs knock off NE Tigers, 43-27

GOODMAN — The Holmes Community College Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in the North Division here Thursday with a 43-27 win over the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers behind three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown from sophomore quarterback Chase Richardson.

Holmes will travel to Jones on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.

Northeast got on the scoreboard first in the game on a rushing touchdown. The extra point was good, and the Tigers led 7-0 with 7:02 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs responded to tie the game as J.J. Harrell scored from a yard out with 3:14 to play after Colston Bennett's extra point was good.

Holmes went up 14-7 early in the second when Richardson found D.J. Welch on an 85-yard touchdown pass. Bennett's kick was good with 13:02 left in the second quarter.

After a Northeast fumble, Bennett connected on a 20-yard field goal to extend the Holmes lead to 17-7 with 7:31 left in the first half.

The Tigers cut the lead to three at 17-14 with 4:27 left in the first half when the Tigers scored on a passing touchdown and PAT. 

Northeast took the lead at 21-17 with 9:49 left in the third as the Tigers added a rushing touchdown and extra point.

Holmes then answered the score as Richardson scampered in from four yards out. The Bulldogs led 24-21 with 7:01 left in the third.

On the next possession, Richardson found K.J. Miller on a 56-yard screen pass for a touchdown and the lead increased to 30-21 with 4:53 left in the third.

The Bulldogs continued to air it out in the fourth as Richardson connected with Harrell on a 58-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 37-21 lead with 9:26 left in the game.

Northeast scored with 2:19 on a rushing touchdown. The try for two failed.

The Bulldog defense got the final score fo the game when Jeremy Atkins picked off the Tigers and raced in from 60 yards out. The extra point failed.

Richardson finished 31-of-47 passing for 413 yards with three touchdowns and added 80 yards rushing on 18 carries and a touchdown. Welch had three catches for 89 yards, Harrell had three catches for 78 yards and Miller had three catches for 70 yards. E.J. Segrest was credited with 13 tackles while Atkins had nine and Kendrick Davis and Kam'Ron Robinson each had seven.
