Holmes racks 34 points in first half; gets 34-14 win over Northeast

MADISON --- Holmes Community College dropped 34 quick first half points on the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers here at Madison Central High School Thursday night cruising to a 34-14 win and most importantly jumping out to a 1-0 North Division record.

With the win, the Bulldogs go to 1-2 overall. Holmes travels to Itawamba Thursday night at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the Bulldog Radio Network starting at 6 p.m. with the Jeff Koonz's Coaches Show.

The Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter as Dennis Robertson found Daniel Huffines along the Northeast sidelines from 22 yards out with 10:34 left in the first quarter. Stephan Lloyd kicked the extra point.

Holmes another score late in the first quarter when Robertson scampered in from two yards out with 1:33 left. Lloyd's kick made the score 14-0.

The Bulldogs another score with 11:23 left in the second when Antwan Bulley scored from 16 yards out. Bulley was hemmed up at the line of scrimmage but broke free for the score. The extra point from Lloyd was no good.

On Northeast's next drive, Kris Givens picked off Northeast quarterback Nolan Genovese and raced in for the score from 74 yards out with 8:25 to play in the first half. Lloyd's kick made the score 27-0.

On fourth down from the Tiger 24, Dennis Robertson broke free for the touchdown with 1:25 left in the first half. Lloyd's kick made the score 34-0 at halftime.

Northeast added a one-yard touchdown from Jay Jones with 2:23 left in the third quarter, and a Matt Lipham score from a yard out with 11 minutes left in the game. Chris Cooper nailed both extra points.

Robertson finished the game with 61 yards on nine carries and went 18-of-28 for 159 yards and an interception. Fred Franklin had 60 yards on 12 carries.

The Bulldog defense held the Tigers to 221 total yards including 156 yards on the ground on 31 carries and 65 yards on 11-of-33 passes. Kris Givens ended the game with two interceptions while Terrell Cason and Dahendrick Thompson each had one. Bobby Hill had eight tackles in the game including a sack and one tackle for loss. Marquiz Edget had two sacks for the Bulldogs while Eric Hilton added another.
