Lady Bulldogs fall in first round of MACJC State Tournament
WESSON — The Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs fell here Monday in the first round of the MACJC State Tournament with a 89-66 loss to the Lady Bobcats of Jones County Junior College. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by 16 at halftime, 48-32, and as many as 26 in the second half.
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 13-8 and are waiting to hear if they will be participating in next week's Region XXIII Tournament at Mississippi College.
Holmes scored the game's first four points, but JCJC came back and went up 29-18 with 8:03 left in the first half. A Tiffany Wiliams' bucket with 7 minutes to play pulled the Lady Bobcat lead down to seven points at 29-22. The Lady Bobcats then increased the lead to 16 points just before halftime.
A Williams basket with 14:15 left made it 58-42 before Jones went on a 10-1 run to take a 25-point lead with 11 minutes to play.
Williams led Holmes, 13-8, with 13 points and eight rebounds. Amber Clay added 11 points and Louise Collins had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Holmes, which also had 34 rebounds, was 23-of-62 from the field (5-of-13 on 3-pointers) for 37.1 percent. They were 15-of-24 from the foul line.
